The MRT Kajang Line is the first line of the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit Project (KVMRT). The MRT Putrajaya Line is the second line of the KVMRT Project to be developed after the successful completion of first line — MRT Kajang Line in July 2017. The MRT Putrajaya line Phase 1 will start operations from 3pm on Thursday, 16th June 2022.
The 51km MRT Kajang Line begins from Sungai Buloh MRT station, located to the north-west of Kuala Lumpur, and runs through the city centre of Malaysia’s capital city before ending in Kajang MRT station, a fast developing town to the south-east of the city.
The MRT Kajang line has 31 stations of which seven are underground. The MRT line runs underground for a distance of 9.5km beneath the centre of Kuala Lumpur while the rest of the alignment is elevated.
The train frequency at peak hours is about 3 minutes.
The end-to-end journey from the Sungai Buloh MRT station to the Kajang MRT station takes about 84 minutes.
The MRT Line provides connectivity to other rail lines, as this would allow rail users to transfer from one rail service to another, allowing the reach of the rails services to expand even further through this connectivity.
Announced in 2006, the MRT Kajang line was initially planned as a LRT at 43 km in length, linking the densely populated areas of Damansara in the northwest and Cheras in the southeast, through the central business district of Kuala Lumpur city.
After much evaluation and studies, the government then decided to extend the alignment at both ends to Sungai Buloh and Kajang respectively, adding 8 km to the line for a total of 51 km.
In addition, the line was changed from LRT to the MRT system, with higher capacity trains.
Phase One of the MRT Kajang Line from Sungai Buloh MRT station to Semantan MRT station began operations on 16 December 2016.
The Phase Two, from Semantan MRT Station to Kajang MRT Station started its operations on 17 July 2017, allowing trains to run the entire alignment.
Each train set serving the line have four cars, allowing a total capacity of 1,200 passengers.
The daily ridership is estimated to be about 400,000 passengers. Trains will run at a frequency of 3.5 minutes.
A total of 300 feeder buses would be deployed to support 49 routes at 23 MRT stations and the operating hours are from 5.30am to 11.30pm.
The rolling stock is manufactured by Siemens/CSR Nanjing Puzhen in a partnership with SMH Rail Consortium Sdn Bhd. The trains will be driverless with a capacity of 1,200 passengers in a 4-car trainsets formation.
The 4-car trainsets are maintained at 2 purpose built facilities, Sungai Buloh and Kajang depots, located nearby Kwasa Damansara MRT station and Sungai Jernih MRT station respectively.
