Please Note : All Intercity Express Trains between Butterworth and KL have been cancelled from 9th May 2016.

Please Note : There is no longer a sleeper train from Penang to Kuala Lumpur as the Langkawi Express night train number 21 (that used to operate between Butterworth and KL), is no longer stopping at Butterworth from 1st September 2015.

Train number 1 the Ekspres Rakyat train costs:

1st class seat: Adult 67MYR – Child 38MYR
2nd class seat: Adult 34MYR – Child 21MYR

All the above coaches are air-conditioned.

These fares are now longer valid as the Intercity Express Trains are now all cancelled and replaced by the new fast ETS Trains.

Buying Tickets for the Train from Butterworth to Kuala Lumpur

If you are staying in Penang, there is no need to go over to Butterworth station to buy your train tickets as there is a small KTM ticket office in George Town at the jetty for the ferry to Butterworth.

The jetty is easy to get to as nearly all buses on the island will end up there.

Once you arrive at the jetty walk along the pathway to the ferry departures and the office is on the right hand side just past all the small shops.

If you want to book a sleeping berth it is best to book in advance, as far ahead as possible.

The best way to book your train tickets in advance is through an online ticket agent.

They sometimes sell tickets at a slight discount and you may not have to pay the 2MYR admin fee imposed by KTMB for booking on their website.
