The train starts off in Hat Yai as just a couple of second class
coaches and then picks up more at the border at Padang Besar Station.
So if you
are booking your ticket from Thailand you will only be able to purchase
either a 2nd class seat or 2nd class sleeper berth.
After crossing the border there is a much larger choice of seating available with 1st class sleepers, and Economy seats added.
If you are a really tight budget and want to travel economy, you may
want to catch a local bus from Hat Yai to the border at Padang Besar,
walk over the border and catch the train from here (the station is over a
walkway / bridge, just on your right as you pass out of Malaysian
Immigration).
That should save you around 20MYR on a ticket to KL.
