KTM Butterworth Train Schedule (Jadual) ETS, KTM Komuter
The KTM Butterworth Train Station is located on the mainland in Penang state, just three kilometres away from the popular tourist destination of George Town on Penang Island.
So if you want to take a train to Penang Island, Butterworth is where you will be disembarking.
Butterworth Train Timetable 2021 – 2022 (Jadual / 时间表)
From the railway station the ferry terminal is just a couple of minutes
walk away and ferries to Georgetown run from around 6am until a little after midnight, departing every 15
minutes or so during peak hours, slightly less during the quieter times of day.
KTM Butterworth ETS Train Schedules (Jadual / 时间表)
The new ETS high-speed train service now operates as far south as Gemas.

New KTM Train Schedule from May 2016:
From this date all the old diesel KTM Intercity Trains will not be running on the line between Gemas and Padang Besar – So there will be no KTM Intercity Express Trains to or from Butterworth – All long distance trains are now operated by the new Electric Train Services (ETS).
From this date if you want to travel south of Gemas (ie Johor Bahru / Singapore), you will have to catch an ETS Train to Gemas, then catch a Shuttle / Intercity Train southwards.

The International Express is still operating but this SRT Train (State Railway of Thailand) now stops at the Thailand – Malaysia border station of Padang Besar.
Between Padang Besar and Butterworth you will now have to use the new KTM Komuter Trains that operate ever hour or two throughout the day.
New Komuter Trains from Butterworth.
The Komuter Utara Shuttle Train service is now connecting Penang to Padang Rengas in Perak, stopping at all the smaller stations in between.
If you want to use this service you will firstly have to take a Komuter train to Bukit Mertajam (apart from a few service that originate in Butterworth).
From January 2016 a new Komuter service has started between Butterworth and Padang Besar on the Thai border.

Butterworth to Ipoh Trains
Now all the KTM Intercity Express services on this route are cancelled, you will have to take an ETS Train.
You can also use the Ipoh train route to travel to and from the Cameron Highlands to Penang.
Butterworth to Johor Bahru (JB Sentral) Trains
You now have to travel to JB via Gemas, where the dual track current ends. From Gemas you can connect to a Shuttle train service to JB Sentral.
Alternatives would be to travel on more regular trains via Kuala Lumpur and then catch another service from there to Gemas, then the shuttle to JB.

Butterworth to Kuala Lumpur (KL Sentral) Trains
The new ETS Trains go back and forth to Malaysia’s capital city, Kuala Lumpur (KL for short).
This is the best way to travel from Penang to KL (and now the fastest) as you arrive at KL Sentral station with all its transport links to the rest of the city and airport, rather than at one of the many bus stations in KL.
If yu want to travel from Butterworth by train to KLIA / KLIA2:
Butterworth to Singapore Woodlands Trains
Take an ETS Train to Gemas, then a Shuttle from there to JB Sentral.
From JB, you will now have to continue your journey to Singapore by one of the new Shuttle Trains to Woodlands, or take a bus into the city.
KTM Butterworth to Langkawi Trains
Alternatively, you can take a direct boat from Penang to Langkawi.

Trains from Butterworth Penang to Thailand
Now that the International Express is no longer travelling down to Butterworth, you will have to now take a cheap Komuter Train to the border at Padang Besar.
Once at the border you can connect to the International Express which travels all the way up to Bangkok, stopping in places like :
Surat Thani (for the ferry to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan)
Chumphon (for boats to Koh Tao)
and then along the beach resorts such as Hua Hin, on the Gulf of Thailand.
Alternatively you can take a Shuttle Train from Padang Besar to Hat Yai, then a choice of trains from Hat Yai heading north to Bangkok.
