The development of new low cost terminal Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2) is on track for completion in April 2013, said Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) chairman Tan Sri Aris Othman.

Aris said although there were delays and difficulties at the beginning stage, progress is expected to speed up once the foundation of klia2 is completed.

Speaking to reporters at the launch of MAHB’s Green Day 2012, he said the new terminal in Sepang was 42% completed as of end 2011 and the cost is still within the RM3.9 billion cap.

“We also hope to get some savings because we really imposed stringent conditions (on klia2),” he said.

On traffic volume at KLIA this year, Aris said it is expected to be lower than last year’s due to several factors including the turmoil in Middle East.

“We are happy with the results of the just-concluded year, it is more than what we expected and based on forecast by an international organisation, we expect traffic to be less this year.

“But we are still quite confident. The impact will still be there, but won’t be as large as felt by other parts of the world. We still expect positive growth this year,” he said.

He said MAHB’s RM598 million private placement to fund klia2 will be done through book building, to be completed by first half of the year.

Meanwhile, the RM250 million upgrading of Penang International Airport is also on track for completion by year-end.

Aris said the upgrade and expansion of the airport was carried out to meet new requirements from the Malaysian immigration.

MAHB’s Green Day 2012, an employee engagement programme aimed at stimulating environmental awareness, saw its staff participating in activities such as a walkathon, treasure hunt, fish release, green exhibition and planting of 500 trees at its corporate office.

Aris said the programme will be extended to other airports and included as MAHB’s annual programme.
