Customs officers at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2) seized 3.6kg of drugs valued at RM680,000, hidden in nine handbags at the entry gate at 2am on Aug 19.

KLIA Customs director Datuk Chik Omar Chik Lim said it was the first drug incident at klia2 since it began operations in early May.

“We are stepping up surveilliance to eliminate such activities,” he said at a media conference here today.

He said imaging on a baggage showed methamphetamine hidden in nine new handbags in specially designed compartments. All handbags were wrapped in plastic.

The suspect, a 38-year-old Filipina, who was on a flight from Hong Kong to klia2, was heading to Surat Thani, southern Thailand, on the same day.

Chik Omar said the suspect was in Malaysia for the first time.

She has been remanded for seven days under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
