KTM Bhd has announced new fares for its Komuter service, hours after the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) gave its approval.

The fares, which will be effective May 1, start from RM1.20 (Teluk Pulai to Teluk Gadong, two adjacent stations in Selangor which are 1km apart), and go up to RM19.20 for a ride from Sungai Gadut, Negri Sembilan to Tanjung Malim, Perak. Currently, commuters pay RM1 and RM12.10 respectively for the two trips.

If one drives a car from Sungai Gadut to Tanjung Malim, it would take at least two hours to cover the 160km distance.

The price for some sectors remain unchanged, such as the one from Kampung Batu to Bank Negara, which remains at RM2.

“We are thankful to the Government for approving this as it will greatly help us in our operations and raise service standards across the board,” said a senior KTMB executive.

KTMB is using this fare review exercise to push for cashless travel, under which Komuter users will be given discounts if they do not pay in cash.

Those using the Touch n Go card will enjoy a 20% discount, while those using weekly passes will get at least 18% off, with discounts going up to 26%, depending on the distance travelled.

Monthly pass holders will enjoy the most savings as their discounts start from 19%, and go up to 35%. Concessions for senior citizens, the disabled and children, between four and 12 years old, remain at 50%.

In a statement, KTMB said the punctuality of Komuter trains had improved substantially since 2012.

In a briefing earlier, SPAD CEO Mohd Nur Ismal Kamal said the long-term goal was to double the current Komuter service frequency at peak hours, which meant reducing the waiting period of 15 minutes between trains to 7.5 minutes.
