Central Market, a landmark for Malaysian culture and heritage

The Central Market (Pasar Seni) was founded in 1888 and originally used as a wet market. It has since been classified as a Heritage Site by the Malaysian Heritage Society and it is now a landmark for Malaysian culture and heritage.

The Central Market is arranged in a stall concept, representing the traditional market that has existed in Kuala Lumpur since the 1800s.

The second floor hosts a food court, offering an array of food. Notable are two-storey and single-storey buildings resembling the kampong-style houses representing the many ethnic groups living harmoniously in Kuala Lumpur.

Tourists flock to Central Market for its variety of handicrafts, art, kebaya, songket, batik and authentic Malaysian souvenirs.

A Batik Emporium houses well-known designer labels, with the best Malaysian-made batik items ranging from clothes, shoes, bags to home furnishing.

Travelers can scroll through the many sections that exists within the Central Market, from the Lorong Melayu, Straits Chinese, and Lorong India which is located on the west wing.

For a more contemporary take on the local arts scene, The Annexe Gallery, located at the back of Central Market, is a popular venue for events such as film screenings, art exhibitions and public discourses.

The Central Market is located at Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock and the pedestrian-only section of Jalan Hang Kasturi, a few minutes away from Chinatown, Petaling Street.

Go KL City Bus: The Go KL City Bus – Purple Line will make stop at bus stop near Pasar Seni LRT station. Central Market is just a short walk from the bus stop.

Kelana Jaya Line LRT: Take the LRT and stop at the Pasar Seni LRT station. Central Market is about 5 minutes walk from the LRT station.

Ampang Line LRT: Take the LRT and stop at the Masjid Jamek LRT station. Central Market is about 10 minutes walk from the LRT station.
